Mass General Hospital's Department of Psychiatry collaborates with primary care physicians to provide appropriate treatment and care.

-- Current patients: please call your treatment program directly.

-- New ADULT patients referred through their primary care physician or MGH Specialist, call:
Psychiatry Access Line – (617) 724-7792. Please see our Frequently Asked Questions.

Our first priority is to evaluate and treat patients who receive their medical care primarily at Mass General. We collaborate with your treatment team on all major decisions affecting your health.

If you or your child receives care outside of Mass General, we will try to direct you to other clinical resources for assessment and treatment. Depending on the individual situation, you may benefit from taking part in one of our ongoing research studies.

For more information on pediatric referrals, please call 617-726-2725.

What to Expect

At every visit, photo identification will be required to insure safe, quality patient care. Please see our Photo ID Policy.

For pediatric patients, at the initial visit, you and your child will meet with a child psychiatrist, child clinical psychologist, child psychiatrist resident or child clinical psychology intern. Depending on the type of evaluation, you instead might meet with a senior staff psychiatrist and third- or fourth-year adult psychiatry resident.

If your child is experiencing particularly complex problems, he or she might benefit from a larger team evaluation. In such cases, a senior staff psychiatrist or psychologist will perform the evaluation while being observed by a group of residents or interns.

Developing a Treatment Plan

The psychiatrist or psychologist who evaluates you typically makes a diagnosis after the first or second visit. As a next step, they will work with you to develop a treatment plan to address your goals and concerns. Our long-term goal is to help our patients achieve and maintain good mental health, and to function at the highest possible level in their lives.
