The Center for Quantitative Health (CQH) in the Division of Clinical Research at Massachusetts General Hospital focuses on utilizing large data sets to develop strategies for probabilistic medicine and quantitative health.

We believe that despite the incredible hype associated with big data, there is an opportunity to better serve our patients by developing tools for making clinically actionable predictions.
By facilitating the interaction of clinical and basic scientists at MGH and the broader community, and providing tools to do challenging but essential studies, CQH is intended to bridge the gap between large datasets and clinical application. It works closely with the MGH clinical and research programs, with the Clinical Trials Network and Institute (CTNI), and with translational programs such as the Psychiatric and Neurodevelopmental Genetics Unit (PNGU) and the Center for Genomic Medicine.
Roy H. Perlis, MD, MScDirector, Center for Quantitative Health, Massachusetts General HospitalProfessor of Psychiatry, Harvard Medical School
Dr. Perlis is the director of the Center for Quantitative Health in the Department of Psychiatry at Massachusetts General Hospital, the Associate Director of the Psychiatric Genetics Program in Mood and Anxiety Disorders, and Professor of Psychiatry at Harvard Medical School. He also serves as consultant to the American Psychiatric Association's bipolar treatment guidelines workgroup.
A graduate of Brown University, Harvard Medical School and Harvard School of Public Health, he completed his residency, chief residency, and clinical/research fellowship at Mass General before joining the faculty.
Dr. Perlis' clinical work and research is focused on difficult-to-treat or treatment resistant mood disorders, including major depressive disorder and bipolar disorder. He has authored more than 125 articles reporting original research, as well as numerous book chapters and reviews.
Current research efforts include identifying genetic variations which might predict treatment response, creating neuronal models of disease, and identifying and studying novel treatments for mood disorders.
His research has been supported by awards from NARSAD, NIMH, NSF, the American Philosophical Society, the Bowman Family Foundation, and the Stanley Center for Psychiatric Research, among others. In 2010 Dr. Perlis was awarded the Depression and Bipolar Support Alliance's Klerman Young Investigator Award.
Thomas H. McCoy, MD Director of Research, Center for Quantitative Health
Dr. McCoy attended Dartmouth College and Cornell Medical School before completing the MGH/McLean Psychiatry residency and an informatics fellowship in the Center for Experimental Drugs and Diagnostics. Dr. McCoy served as MGH Consult Psychiatry Chief Resident.
Kamber L. HartClinical Research Coordinator, Center for Quantitative Health
Kamber graduated from Princeton University in 2016 with a AB in psychology. Her thesis focused on linguistic patterns of depression, specifically the use of metaphors in literature and personal accounts to describe the depressed state. Her goals are to apply to medical school and continue studying the intersection of language and mental health.
Amelia M. PellegriniClinical Research Coordinator, Center for Quantitative Health
Amelia graduated from Tufts University with a BA in Clinical Psychology and Spanish. She is from Bangor, Maine and is looking forward to spending the next few years in Boston before pursuing a Ph.D. in Clinical Psychology. She is particularly interested in investigating neuropsychological abnormalities in schizophrenia and other psychotic disorders.

Dr. Sheridan has more than 15 years experience in both academia and industry deriving, expanding, differentiating, and characterizing pluripotent and multipotent stem cells and their progeny for the purposes of disease modeling, genetic engineering, cell therapy, tissue engineering, and drug discovery. Currently a Senior Research Investigator and Director of the Platform for Cellular Modeling of Neuropsychiatric Disease in the Center for Genomic Medicine (CGM) at Massachusetts General Hospital, he has also served as a Principal Scientist in biotech leading cross-functional teams in stem cell technology development.
Most recently, his research at the CGM involves the generation and characterization of human induced pluripotent stem cells (iPSCs), neural stem cells, and neurons directly from patients of various neurodevelopmental and neuropsychiatric disease backgrounds (Fragile X syndrome, Rett Syndrome, CDKL5, Pitt-Hopkins Syndrome, Schizophrenia, Bipolar) in order to facilitate the development of novel cell-based assays of disease mechanism.
Dr. Sheridan received his PhD in Molecular Genetics at the University of California, Irvine and followed up with post-doctoral training in genetic engineering at Harvard University.
Jennifer Wang, PhDSr. Research Investigator
Jen has a BA in Mathematics and a BS in Physics from the University of California, San Diego. She earned her PhD in Neuroscience from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology where she studied neural circuits in-vitro using electrophysiology and optogenetics. She did a fellowship at MGH reprogramming patient cell models to identify psychiatric disease phenotypes. She continues this work as a senior research scientist where she develops new assays and tools for psychiatric disease models.
Marion Joseph Riggs, PhDPost-doctoral Fellow
Marion "Joe" Riggs earned his PhD in the Integrative Life Science Program at Virginia Commonwealth University where his dissertation work resulted in phenotypic identification of a gene that improves clonality of human pluripotent stem cells. Riggs earned his Master's degree in Bioinformatics from the University of South Florida.
Joe joined Dr. Roy Perlis' lab at Massachusetts General Hospital, Center for Genomic Medicine, in the summer of 2015 working with induced pluripotent stem cell, patient-derived, neural models of neuropsychiatric illness. More specifically, his post-doctoral work applies cutting-edge approaches for improving scientific understanding of cellular mechanisms in major depressive disorder. As such, as a cellular biologist, he “very much enjoys the opportunity to collaborate with clinicians with the goal to advance translational research in mood and anxiety-related disorders." In his spare-time, Riggs promotes the expansion of the Student Society for Stem Cell Research (SSSCR).
Smita Jagtap, PhDPost-doctoral Fellow
Dr. Jagtap earned her PhD degree in Cell and Molecular Biology at University of Cologne, Germany. During her PhD, she worked with hESC and hiPSC to develop toxicity assays and understand the molecular mechanisms of developmental toxicants such as retinoic acid, cytarabine, and thalidomide. She worked on various differentiation protocols (neuronal, cardiomyocytes, and hepatocyte-like cells) using hESC and hiPSC.
She is interested in the study of a rare X-linked genetic disorder CDKL5 (cyclin-dependent kinase-like 5) that results in early onset, difficult to control seizures, and severe neurodevelopmental impairment, with the goal of understanding the mechanisms and identifying novel targets. In particular, she would like to develop treatments selectively targeting diseased neurons by exploiting changes in neuronal metabolic potential during the course of the disorder.
When not at work, Smita enjoys music, sketching, and painting with urban sketchers.
Ting FuResearch Technologist
Ting is a senior research technologist with more than 14 years experience in a variety of biomedical research areas, including rabbit monoclonal antibody development, therapeutic drugs discovery targeting EGFR family receptor, and the generation of iPSC-derived neurons. Since she joined MGH in 2012, she has successfully generated more than 100+ iPSCs, NPCs, and neurons from patients of various neuro-developmental disorders and neuro-psychiatric diseases, such as Pitt-Hopkins Syndrome. By using state of the art iPSC technologies, she hopes we can discover the pathogenesis of these diseases, and eventually find a cure to these neuronal disorders.
Jeffrey ChenResearch Technologist
Jeffrey graduated with a BS in Biomedical Engineering from Boston University. He previously did research in the Wong and Khalil lab at Boston University, studying conditionally dimerizable split protein systems using recombinases and CRISPR. He also did research at the Mount Sinai School of Medicine, where he researched biomarkers of inflammation in corneal epithelial cells. He is interested in studying genetic engineering and researching stem cell therapy in the future.
Jessica GraciasResearch Technologist
Jessica graduated with a MS in Biomedical Science in 2013 and has since worked as a technician in various labs around Boston. She has extensive experience working on both animal and human models of disease. Her current project focuses on the role of microglia in neuropsychiatric diseases. Eventually, she would like to continue her research while pursuing a PhD.

Jessica graduated with a BS in Biology from Emmanuel College. Prior to joining the Perlis lab, she studied mood and autism spectrum disorders using animal models. In the long-term, she hopes to pursue a graduate degree and study the neurodevelopmental basis for mental illness. Her hobbies include scuba diving, manual photography, and playing with her two dogs.

The purpose of this research study is to collect, process and store samples to do research on neuropsychiatric disorders. This research study looks at changes in the human body associated with neuropsychiatric disorders. Part of this study involves the collection of skin and blood samples that will be stored in a tissue bank for later use. Research using these samples will attempt to identify causes and what helps prevent, treat, or cure neuropsychiatric disorders. In addition, the samples collected for this study will be used for genetic research on these diseases.
Current and past CQH studies are supported by funding from NIMH, NARSAD, the National Science Foundation, AHRQ, the Stanley Center for Psychiatric Research at the Broad Institute, the American Philosophical Society, the Bowman Family Foundation, and the Sidney J.
