  • MGH's oldest patient gets clean bill of health
    The MGH's oldest and dearest patient had a checkup Jan. 6 and is reported to be doing well. Padihershef, a 2,500-year-old mummy who calls the MGH Ether Dome home, underwent a rare cleaning and restoration procedure by a conservator and a team of other professionals trained in restoring ancient artifacts.

  • Child hospitalizations good time to get parents to stop smoking
    Children admitted to the hospital for respiratory illnesses often suffer from second-hand smoke exposure caused by parental smoking. MGH researchers have found that hospitalizations can be good times to address parental smoking and smoking cessation. As reported in a study in the January 2003 issue of Pediatrics, researchers were able to help many parents stop smoking and gain a better awareness of the harm passive smoke can inflict on their children.
  • Healing hands create healing art
    While providing excellent health care to patients is the top priority for MGH clinicians, many of them also do their best to heal patients' broken spirits. A group of caregivers at MassGeneral Hospital for Children are using the healing power of art to bring hope and joy to young pediatric patients. This group of physicians, house staff, nurses and administrators has joined together with patients and families to form the Healing Arts Group and will host a special celebration to highlight their artistic endeavors Jan. 15, at 5:30 pm in the WACC Lobby.
  • Financial assistance for future education
    MGH employees who want to further their careers by taking advantage of educational and training opportunities can receive financial assistance through the MGH Tuition Reimbursement Program. Employees are eligible for the program after completing six months of continuous employment.
  • Satcher speaks on racial disparity at MGH
    During December's holiday hustle and bustle, many MGHers took time Dec. 16 to hear a prestigious guest speaker raise an important subject to the health care community racial disparities. Former U.S. Surgeon General David Satcher, MD, spoke about inequality in health status and access to care for minorities.
  • What to do in winter weather
    With the recent winter blasts of snow and freezing rain, it is important for MGHers to be reminded of the hospital's severe weather policy, which is found in the Human Resources Policy and Procedures Manual.
  • Walk helps ALS research
    Ellen's Walk for amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) research at the MGH, named in honor of MGH ALS patient Ellen Kaatz, took place Nov. 10 in New Hampshire and raised $42,000 to support the MGH ALS Clinical Trials Unit.
  • In memoriam
    Marshall K. Bartlett, MD, former director of MGH Operating Rooms, died Dec. 14 at the age of 98. He joined the MGH surgical team in 1932.

  • Martin Luther King, Jr., Day celebration
    MGH employees and staff are invited to "A Celebration of the Legacy of Rev. Martin Luther King, Jr.," Jan. 24, from 3 to 4 pm in the O'Keeffe Auditorium. John Lewis a congressman from Georgia, civil rights activist and advocate of the philosophy of nonviolence will speak at the event.
