SPECIAL MILLENNIUM EDITION

  • Reflections on a millenium
The arrival of the year 2000 offers an opportunity to reflect on the past, evaluate the present and look to the future. In health care, so much progress has been made mostly in the last two centuries. The Massachusetts General Hospital has been at the forefront of much of this progress.
  • Hearts and minds together: patient care
Never in history has so much progress in the medical field been made as in the past two centuries. And MGH caregivers supported by a variety of technicians, researchers, administrators and support staff have led the way in providing the highest quality of care to patients regardless of their ability to pay.
  • Vital to the MGH mission: Research and education
At the beginning of the 19th century, when the MGH was founded, medical research and teaching were crude, to say the least. Despite the poor outcomes experienced by most patients, few physicians had the curiosity or initiative to search for new treatments or question the wisdom of the day.
  • The backbone of the hospital – its people
The responsibility of maintaining the status of the MGH as one of the greatest hospitals in the nation and the world falls equally on the shoulders of all of its employees, from the most distinguished clinician and accomplished scientist to administrative and support personnel working hard behind the scenes. The daily foundation of success is laid by often faceless and unsung workers, while distinguished, more visible leaders pave the way.
  • Looking toward the future – a continuum of care
As we turn the corner and begin another hundred years of medicine, what can we expect? Will our children's grandchildren be able to order a new heart or lung on demand? Will cancer and AIDS be cured and forgotten? Will they be replaced by more evasive, more virulent, more bewildering diseases?
