  • Martin Luther King Jr. legacy honored; hospital leadership recognized
    W ith memorial events taking place throughout the country this week to honor the late Rev. Martin Luther King Jr.'s legacy, the MGH held the first of two such events to commemorate the civil rights leader with a special presentation, "Commitment, Dedication and Innovation: Making Dreams into Reality."
  • Urgent: Blood needed
    There currently is a critical need for blood at the MGH and at blood donation centers across the country. According to MGH Blood Donor Center staff, the blood supply has been on a steady decline since October. Here at the MGH, the center has received 483 fewer donations than during this same period last year.
  • MGH ProTech grad joins Mayor Menino for work force development announcement
    Delmy Suarez — senior attending pharmacy technician at the MGH and a graduate of the ProTech program — was among members of the MGH community who joined Boston Mayor Thomas Menino for an announcement that the city is committing $1.5 million to a new work force development program for Boston residents. The funds will be coupled with $1.3 million in foundation grants that will begin a five-year program to guide Bostonians to entry-level jobs in health care and other fields.
  • MGH scientists identify hundreds of worm genes that regulate fat storage
    MGH scientists and their colleagues have scoured thousands of genes in the C. elegans worm and have come up with hundreds of candidates that may determine how fat is stored and used in a variety of animals. The findings, published in the Jan. 16 issue of Nature, represent the first survey of an entire genome for all genes that regulate fat storage.
  • MGHer becomes Hall of Famer
    T he National Restaurant Association recently inducted Helen Doherty, RD, FMP, director of MGH Food and Nutrition Services, into the 2002 Massachusetts Hospitality Hall of Fame. Doherty was presented with the award at the 13th annual Massachusetts Hospitality Hall of Fame awards dinner Nov. 18 at Anthony's Pier 4.
