  • Hazmat training prepares MGHers for emergencies
    It may not be in their job descriptions to don personal protective equipment — such as face masks, breathing respirators and chemical-resistant coveralls — but a group of 66 MGHers did just that last week in a series of hazardous materials (HAZMAT) decontamination training sessions.
  • Team MGH loses game but wins big
    With much anticipation, the MGH's newly formed hockey team took to the ice Feb. 7 in a fund-raising event that raised more than $11,000 for the MGH United Way campaign. On the 25th anniversary of the Blizzard of '78, another unexpected snowstorm raged outside the New England Sports Center in Marlborough, Mass., as Team MGH faced off against the Black and Gold Legends — a team of former Boston Bruins hockey players.
  • New endovascular surgery suite unveiled
    Feb. 10 marked the unveiling of a long-awaited new endovascular surgery suite in the operating room that offers integrated surgical and radiological capabilities. This state-of-the-art facility will help accommodate the expansion of MGH Vascular Surgery from the full spectrum of conventional surgery to more widely used minimally invasive methods, known as endovascular surgery.
  • SAC meeting examines future of MGH research
    The future of research at the MGH was a major theme of the 56th annual meeting of the hospital's Scientific Advisory Committee (SAC), which took place Feb. 5 to 7. Several presentations and discussions focused on the four research centers that will be housed in the new Charles River Plaza building.

  • Recognizing excellence: Bowditch Prize awarded
    Jerene Bitondo, PA, of Cardiac Surgery, and Virginia Capasso, RN, PhD, of Surgical Nursing, were named this year's recipients of the annual Nathaniel Bowditch Prize in recognition of the significant contributions they each have made to improving the quality of care while reducing costs. The prize — an award certificate, a lapel pin and a check for $5,000 — was presented to each last week at a luncheon honoring the nominees.
