  • From Russia with love: Young patient receives heart treatment at MGH
    As people across the country exchange cards and give flowers and chocolates to their loved ones on Valentine's Day, this "holiday of the heart" has a different meaning for a young patient at the MGH. Fourteen-year-old Ekaterina "Katya" Grigorieva and her mother, Masha, came to Boston from Russia to seek the help of MassGeneral Hospital for Children in treating a heart defect that Katya was born with.
  • SAC meeting celebrates, examines MGH research program
    The 55th annual meeting of the MGH Scientific Advisory Committee (SAC), held Feb. 6 to 8, featured a review of the hospital's research program and a discussion of the challenges facing its future growth. The gathering began with the annual poster session Feb. 6, at which more than 60 MGH researchers presented displays about their investigations.
  • Protecting patient privacy: Informed consent
    New patient privacy regulations that are included in the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA), which was passed last year, require MGHers to obtain written consent from patients regarding how employees use and share patient information.
  • Success through selflessness: 2001 United Way campaign exceeds goal
    Last year was a difficult one for charitable organizations across the country. Since vast numbers of people rallied to donate to causes directly benefiting the victims of the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks, the majority of other charities weathered a significant decrease in their own earnings. Despite a year of unprecedented circumstances, however, MGHers rallied to make the 2001 MGH United Way campaign the most successful in hospital history.
  • Of medicine and marathons: Clinic participants learn how to run for health, fun
    Would-be runners who have their sights set on the upcoming Boston Marathon learned some valuable lessons at "Running With a Purpose," a marathon clinic held at the MGH Feb. 9. The clinic began with a presentation by Howard J. Weinstein, MD, chief of Hematology/Oncology at MassGeneral Hospital for Children and captain of the Mass General Marathon Team "Fighting Kids' Cancer ... One Step at a Time."
  • MGHers, Timilty students team up for science fair
    A group of MGH employees and James P. Timilty Middle School students recently discovered that working together can bring about some wonderful results. The school's annual science fair, held this year from Feb. 11 through 14, featured MGHers both as judges who appraised the student projects and as mentors who had helped their young charges in preparing them.
