The
Zipcar: Getting there just got easier The perky green Volkswagen seen zipping in and out of the Fruit
Street Garage recently may be a convenient solution for MGHers who don't
own a car or who don't want to drive their own car to work. It's the
MGH's latest transportation incentive for employees —
the Zipcar.
Work
in progress: Ether Dome painting comes to life During the past four months,
spirits of MGH physicians past have arisen in the Ether Dome —
or, more accurately, they have appeared courtesy of painter Warren Prosperi.
Prosperi is in the midst of a yearlong project to create a realistic
mural depicting the world's first demonstration of the use of ether
in a surgical procedure, which occurred at the MGH in 1846.
Blood vessels hold the key
to thicker hair growth MGH researchers have succeeded in growing hair faster and thicker in mice, thanks to a
protein that promotes blood vessel growth in their skin. The protein-treated mouse hair
follicles while no greater in number than those of normal mice are
individually bigger. Collectively, they increase the total volume of hair by 70 percent. If
the protein has the same effects in humans, it could lead to the first angiogenic therapy
for male pattern baldness.
Surgical technician brings her
music to the MGH The MGH is known worldwide as a center of medical talent.
Yet many MGHers also harbor other gifts, like the musical ear and voice
displayed by surgical technician Wendy Esoldo.
MGH sets
record for most successful United Way campaign The MGH recently topped
another impressive list as the number one hospital in Boston, this time
as the best hospital fundraiser for the United Way of Massachusetts
Bay campaign. Of all the hospitals that raise money for the nonprofit
service organization — 25 in total — the MGH raised
$206,847 in the 2000 MGH United Way campaign.
