Happy anniversary Mass General Imaging-Chelsea

After a successful first year, Mass General Imaging-Chelsea celebrated its anniversary Jan. 7. The center is equipped with state-of-the-art, diagnostic imaging devices to service patients on the North Shore and surrounding communities. Since opening its doors in January 1999, the facility has cared for more than 6,500 patients with its high-speed computed tomography (CT) scanner.

Gloria Iovanna of East Boston, came to MGH-Chelsea last year for a CT scan of her head. "It was terrific," says Iovanna. "My appointment was for 1 pm, and they took me right away. I was out of there in 10 minutes and the staff was very nice." Iovanna, who regularly comes to the MGH for medical care, was referred to the Chelsea center by her doctor because of its proximity to her home.

Florence Berodi of Revere came to MGH-Chelsea in early February to have a CT scan of her kidneys. "When I was diagnosed with a tumor and decided I wanted a second opinion, I called Chelsea," says Berodi. "Lucy Medina-DeValle, listened to my story and was able to schedule an appointment right away. I finally felt at ease." Berodi says that Medina-DeValle, the Radiology Service representative, had extensive knowledge of the center and made Berodi feel special and comfortable. "The technologists were all very efficient, and I got my test results quickly. I would definitely recommend that anybody who needs a CT scan visit MGH-Chelsea," she says.

Kevin Sweeney, director of the center, says that patients are willing to travel to the Chelsea location from great distances because of the same-day or next-day service available. "Having fast access to top-quality MGH care is especially appealing to those patients waiting for answers to what can be perplexing or painful questions," says Sweeney. "Faster answers allow necessary treatments to begin sooner."

In its first year, MGH-Chelsea has processed more than 9,200 CT examinations of all parts of the body. While most CT scanners are located within the confines of a hospital, MGH-Chelsea's imaging facility, located at 100 Everett Ave., is a stand-alone facility that offers the most advanced CT scanner available today in a convenient community location. In addition, free transportation is provided to any patient who lives in the surrounding communities.

"Patients really seem to appreciate the free parking, but that's only one small nicety," says Sweeney. "It's the relaxing atmosphere and the timeliness of appointments that get the kudos." The success of the Chelsea site has prompted plans to establish a CT and MRI center at Mass General West in Waltham, with a target opening in mid-June. The new capabilities will complement the existing radiology services that include nuclear medicine, ultrasound and fluoroscopy.
