Children take center stage

MassGeneral Hospital for Children staff always go the extra mile to provide the best available care to children. This week they went one step further to celebrate Children and Health Care Week, March 20 through 24, by hosting events about and geared toward children. Highlights included performances for patients by singers, magicians, clowns and puppeteers, a visit from the New England Aquarium and the annual children's health fair.

The theme of the health fair was "The States of Good Health," and more than 1,200 children from across Massachusetts visited booths — each representing a U.S. state — to learn about health and safety. Many of the booths were interactive, with opportunities for kids to try on scrubs, touch a real heart, get weighed, brush a giant set of teeth and do arts and crafts related to health care.

A few awards also were given to celebrate the week. Winners of the Family-centered Care Awards were announced March 24 at a "Celebrate Us" party. Winners of the art fair will be announced March 31. Art designed by children from all over the state with the theme "Who or What Keeps Me Healthy or Safe?" is on display in the Main Lobby.

Last year, the MGH received the Association for the Care of Children's Health 1999 Award for Excellence for the hospital's participation in Children and Health Care Week.
