What's Happening Clinical and Professional Development programs
The MGH Center for Clinical and Professional Development will present "Obstetrics
Emergencies: Assuring Appropriate Outcomes Through Nursing Care and Risk Management,"
April 6, from 8 am to 4 pm in the O'Keeffe Auditorium. Participating registered nurses
will receive contact hours. The center, along with the MGH Nursing Research Committee,
will present "Communicating Nursing Research Through Poster Presentations,"
April 6, from noon to 4 pm in the Burr 4 Conference Room. Participants will be awarded 3.3
contact hours and should have some knowledge of Microsoft Windows. For more information or

Professional development series
The Partners Corporate Training and Human Resources departments will offer a biannual
professional development series this spring. Classes begin April 5 and will include such
topics as "Communication: Dealing With Difficult People," "Employment
Laws" and "Rewarding and Recognizing Employees." For a complete course

New telecommunications policies
Beginning April 2, Eastern Massachusetts will implement four new area
codes. Partners HealthCare System telephone numbers and calling areas
will not change, but employees now should dial local calls using 10 digits
— the area code plus
the seven-digit phone number. Also, BWH now will use a five-digit system
on all internal calls, and internal extensions not accessible outside
the hospital will be converted to five-digit extensions with a lead digit

Macaluso awards
Nominations now are being accepted for the 2001 Stephanie M. Macaluso, RN, Expertise in
Clinical Practice Award. The award recognizes direct care providers throughout MGH Patient Care Services who
exemplify the values and expert caregiving embodied by the late Stephanie M. Macaluso, RN.
All MGH direct care providers are eligible. Each winner will receive a $1,500 prize and
will be acknowledged at a reception in June. Nomination forms may be picked up in all
patient care areas, in department offices and at the Gray Lobby information desk. All

National Alcohol Screening Day
The MGH West End House and Spaulding
Rehabilitation Hospital Addiction Rehabilitation Services will sponsor the third
annual National Alcohol Screening Day April 5. Information tables will be in the Main
Corridor, from 9 am to 4 pm and at the MGH Revere, Charlestown, Back Bay and Chelsea
HealthCare centers. West End House clinicians will be on hand to answer questions and to
make referrals for free, anonymous alcohol screenings, which will be held at Spaulding,
from 2 to 5 pm in rooms 8A and 8B. For more information, call (617) 726-3321.
Chelsea literacy fair
The MGH Chelsea HealthCare Center will participate in the Chelsea Literacy Fair, April 4,
from 5:30 to 7:30 pm at the Williams School, 180 Walnut St., Chelsea. The fair will
feature storytelling, books for children and adults, and dinner will be served. For more

Clinical Research Program seminars
The MGH Clinical
Research Program and the Department
of Psychiatry will offer "How To Give A Presentation," April 11, from 4 to
5:30 pm in the O'Keeffe Auditorium. "Introduction to Clinical Investigation"
will be held April 3, 10, 19 and 24 and May 1, from 4 to 5 pm in the Bigelow Amphitheater
