MassGeneral Marathon Team
"Fighting Kids' Cancer ... One Step at a Time"
The MassGeneral Marathon Team, "Fighting Kids' Cancer...One Step at a Time," is comprised of 60 runners, including MGH physicians, nurses, staff, patients and others who care deeply about finding a cure for childhood cancer. Many of the team members are running in the name of MGH patients ranging in age from 3 to 16. These children bravely fight against leukemia, bone cancer, lymphoma, kidney tumors, brain tumors and other types of childhood cancer. Each is hoping for a cure. The team was formed two years ago by Howard Weinstein, MD, chief of Pediatric Hematology/Oncology at MassGeneral Hospital for Children. The idea came to Weinstein after an 18-year-old patient died from incurable sarcoma. The team hopes to raise at least $300,000 this year, and Adidas America will match the money raised by the team dollar-for-dollar. The 104th running of the Boston Marathon will take place April 17. On the day of the race, young patients and their families will cheer their running partners from Weinstein's home at the 20th mile marker in Newton. Weinstein will be running in honor of patients and colleagues with cancer. Team members include:
