  • Tragic deaths shock hospital community
The MGH community was stunned by the news of the tragic deaths of two MGH employees April 8. Brian McGovern, MD, co-director of the MGH Electrophysiology and Arrhythmia Service, and Colleen Mitchell, an administrative assistant for the service, were shot in an office in the Electrophysiology Laboratory. They were immediately rushed to the MGH Emergency Department where they later died. Boston Police officials have deemed the incident a murder-suicide.

  • Grateful family finds MGH care "truly remarkable"
    Dear Dr. Mongan,
My mother, Elinor Toebes, was a cancer patient at Mass General for a year and a half. Unfortunately, she finally succumbed to the disease last year. She had a very rare and aggressive form of uterine cancer. Thanks to the wonderful care received at the MGH, my mother's quality of life was near 100 percent during her entire illness until the last several weeks of her life.
  • First MGH total laparoscopic hysterectomy performed
The MGH Vincent Obstetrics and Gynecology Service continued the tradition of advancing minimally invasive gynecologic surgery when John Petrozza, MD, chief of the MGH Vincent Reproductive Medicine and In Vitro Fertilization (IVF) Division, recently performed the hospital's first total laparoscopic hysterectomy.
  • Ives Erickson honored
Jeanette Ives Erickson, RN, MS, senior vice president for MGH Patient Care Services (PCS) and chief nurse, recently received the first-ever Prism Award from the American Organization of Nurse Executives (AONE) Institute for Patient Care Research and Education. The award was presented to Ives Erickson at the AONE's 2003 annual meeting and exposition.
