  • In the aftermath of tragedy, healing begins
The tragedy is incomprehensible. MGHers still are in shock from the unthinkable shootings that took place April 8 that resulted in the deaths of MGH employees Brian McGovern, MD, and Colleen Mitchell. There seems to be no possible indication that could have predicted the horrific murder-suicide that took place in the hospital's Electrophysiology Laboratory.
  • One step at a time: MGHers to run Boston Marathon
On April 21, some of the MGH's finest will lace up their sneakers and pound the pavement while participating in the 107th annual Boston Marathon. More than 70 MGHers will run the world famous race to raise money for pediatric cancer research at the MGH.
  • New pharmacy program offers better service to uninsured patients
The MGH Drug Therapy Committee soon will be introducing a new program that will help MGH clinicians determine which medications can be offered to patients who qualify for free care. The new program includes a medication formulary — or list of preferred drugs — that will help clinicians better manage these prescriptions in a cost-effective way.
  • MGH/BWH study identifies Alzheimer's associated changes in the eye
Research team led by investigators from the MGH and BWH has discovered that amyloid-beta (A-beta), the protein that forms plaques in the brains of people with Alzheimer's disease, also can be detected in the lens of the human eye. The investigators were able to identify A-beta in lens samples from elderly individuals with and without the disorder. An unusual pattern of amyloid deposits, however, was found only on the lenses of Alzheimer's patients. The observation, published in the April 12 issue of The Lancet, could lead to the development of a non-invasive test to diagnose and track the development of the devastating brain disorder.
  • Pediatric patients queens for a day
Patients of MassGeneral Hospital for Children were treated like royalty April 11, as students from the Wheaton College chapter of "Queen for a Day" pampered the patients from head to toe in the Ellison 17 playroom.
  • MGH wins award for transportation management
The MGH recently received a transportation management award from the Association for Commuter Transportation (ACT) Patriot Chapter. Bonnie Michelman, director of MGH Police and Security, accepted the Leadership Excellence Award on behalf of the MGH at the ACT Patriot Chapter New England Transportation Demand Management conference and awards luncheon April 3.
