MGH and BWH top NIH research funding

For the seventh year in a row, the MGH has ranked first among independent hospitals in research funding from the National Institutes of Health (NIH). For 2000, the MGH received $180 million — an increase of $22 million from 1999. BWH ranked second with $162 million.

"The MGH continues to see a phenomenal expansion in its research efforts," says Ronald Newbower, PhD, Partners vice president for Research Management. "Our success in achieving major grant support from the NIH and other sources is a testament to the excellence and critical nature of the research work our faculty conducts."

Dana-Farber Cancer Institute, with whom Partners has a joint venture in adult cancer care, ranked third among hospitals, and McLean Hospital ranked 15th, the second highest among psychiatric hospitals. If all Partners-affiliated hospitals, including Spaulding Rehabilitation Hospital, were regarded as a single research center, the grand total of $361 million would be second nationwide only to Johns Hopkins University, which includes a number of hospitals along with its medical school.

All of the top five independent hospitals are Boston institutions affiliated with Harvard Medical School.
