• Gene mutations predict which lung cancers will respond to Iressa
  MGH Cancer Center researchers have discovered a molecular marker that identifies lung
  cancer patients whose tumors will respond to treatment with the drug Iressa. Their findings, to be published in the May 20 New England Journal of Medicine (NEJM), were released online April 29.
  

• Running the good race
  Among the sea of thousands of runners, MGHers dressed in red, white and yellow made the hospital proud April 19, when some of the MGH's finest laced up their sneakers, pounded the pavement and braved soaring temperatures — and Heartbreak Hill — while participating in the 108th annual Boston Marathon. More than 130 MGHers ran the world-famous race to raise money for pediatric cancer research, cystic fibrosis and the Durant Fellowship program at the MGH.
  

• Can't get enough of those Pats
  "Patriots rock!" That was the reaction of one young patient when three towering football players from the New England Patriots walked into her room in the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU) April 27. Linebacker Tully Banta-Cain, number 48, wide receiver David Givens, number 87, and wide receiver Bethel Johnson, number 81, came to visit the PICU and Ellison 17 and 18 to sign autographs and pose for pictures with young patients, parents and MGH staff.
  

• 2004 Pam Ellis Award recipient honored
  Patricia Guerriero from MGH Thoracic Surgery is described as "a secretary who exemplifies what a professional executive secretary should be," according to Hermes Grillo, MD, Dean Donahue, MD, and Henning Gaissert, MD, all from MGH Thoracic Surgery. This is one of many reasons why Guerriero was the 2004 recipient of the Pamela J. Ellis Memorial Secretarial Award.

• Symposium honors respected MGH physician
  Laughter filled the O'Keeffe Auditorium April 23 as colleagues and friends gathered for a symposium in honor of Morton Swartz, MD, for his 80th birthday. Swartz was chief of the Infectious Disease Unit at the MGH from 1956 to 1990, and since 1990 has served as the chief of the Jackson Firm of the MGH Department of Medicine.
  

• Give the gift of life: April is organ donation month
  Approximately 17 people die each day awaiting a life-saving organ transplant. They are among the 83,000 people nationwide who are on the national transplant waiting list.During the month of April, hospitals such as the MGH and communities across the nation are observing National Donate Life Month to raise awareness of the critical need for organ and tissue donation.
