Remembering a legacy of kindness: MGHers honored with Durante Award

When long-time patient Arthur Durante, a beloved member of the MGH community, lost his battle with cancer last year, he left behind a legacy of compassion and excellence. The Susan and Arthur Durante Award for Exemplary Care and Service with Cancer Patients — created by Durante and his wife in 1999 — recognizes clinicians and support staff who have demonstrated exceptional caring in their work with cancer patients. On May 1, the 2001 award winners were announced and recognized at a ceremony in the O'Keeffe Auditorium, followed by a reception on Blake 1. Marie Elena Gioiella, MSW, LICSW, of MGH Social Services, was chosen as the clinical recipient, and Anne Brogan, of the Pediatric Radiation Oncology Department and Office for Women's Careers, was designated the support staff honoree.

Nancy J. Tarbell, MD, director of Pediatric Radiation Oncology and the Office for Women's Careers, introduced Brogan, highlighting her compassion and dedication to pediatric patients. Brogan has been an administrative assistant for Pediatric Radiation Oncology since 1998.

Evelyn E. Bonander, MSW, executive director of Social Services, went on to introduce Gioiella, who pioneered the O.C.E.A.N. (Ovarian Cancer Education and Awareness Network) group for oncology patients. Gioiella and Brogan each will receive $1,000 and will have their names engraved on a commemorative plaque in the Cox 1 lobby.
