  • MGH honors unsung heroes
They are the employees who work diligently behind the scenes, ensuring the daily operations of the hospital are smooth and successful. They may not often be seen on the front lines, but on June 4 operations support staff took center stage and were treated to a well-deserved celebration honoring their hard work, dedication and commitment to the hospital.
  • Patient safety at the MGH: Fighting hospital-acquired infections
According to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, nearly 2 million patients in the United States contract an infection while hospitalized — infections they did not have before admission. Because these infections are often resistant to antibiotics, some can be particularly difficult to treat. To address this issue, the MGH is instituting several programs to give clinicians the resources they need to stop the spread of these infections.
  • An exceptional history, exceptionally preserved
In fact, Building 114 in the Charlestown Navy Yard — which now is home to several programs, including the MGH Center for Aging, Genetics and Neurodegeneration — recently was recognized for its historic preservation efforts by the Massachusetts Historic Commission.
  • Portrait of a surgeon
Former chief of MGH Cardiac Surgery, Mortimer Buckley, MD, recently was honored with a portrait unveiling May 16. Buckley was chief of the division for 28 years until his retirement in 1998.
  • Hats off to the first graduates of new degree program
The MGH Radiology Department hosted the first graduation celebration May 28 under the Bulfinch Tent for 22 of the 55 students enrolled in a new master's in health care management pilot program at Cambridge College.
  • A most valuable asset to patient care
Nursing Spectrum honored one of the MGH's own last month when it named Maryfran Hughes, RN, MSN, nurse manager of the Emergency Department, as Nursing Spectrum's New England Nurse of the Year. Nursing Spectrum is a nurse-led communications company that publishes a biweekly magazine and website that celebrates the nursing profession.
  • Friends with Hope are friends in deed
For the second year, members of the "Friends with Hope" organization have donated money to support breast cancer research at the MGH. This year's gift is particularly meaningful for Janet Ballantine, one of the organization's founders.
  • Getting ready for summer fun and safety
In spite of strong winds June 1, the MGH Chelsea HealthCare Center hosted its fifth annual "Safety on Wheels" bike, inline skate and scooter safety event. Families from Chelsea and surrounding areas came to the health center to learn about summertime safety, enjoy ice cream treats and listen to musical entertainment.
