MGH
invests in the future of East Boston High School students
East Boston High School graduates will get a little extra help in their
pursuit of a career in health care, thanks to a new scholarship and educational
commitment made by the MGH. At the high school's awards ceremony June
3, Peter L. Slavin, MD, president of the MGH, presented four scholarships
to East Boston High School graduates who have participated in the hospital's
ProTech internship program. The scholarships total $5,000 and will be
made annually.
In addition, the MGH announced that it will make a $10,000 grant to East
Boston High School to develop a math and English-language arts curriculum
designed to help students succeed in MCAS, SAT and advanced placement
exams and expand mentoring opportunities at the high school.
The MGH has worked with Boston public schools for more than 15 years to
enhance science education and prepare students for health care careers.
In partnership with the Boston Private Industry Council's Pro-Tech program,
the MGH provides opportunities for students from East Boston High School
to work part-time in a variety of MGH clinical departments, including
Patient Care Services, Radiology and some clinical laboratories. In addition,
the MGH provides support for academic instruction for students who have
failed the MCAS exam, as well as summer job opportunities.
"Our partnership with East Boston High School has been a tremendous
benefit to both the
hospital and the students. As an employer, we are committed to building
a skilled and diverse workforce for the future, and through this new scholarship,
we hope to inspire many young people to pursue a career in health care,"said
Slavin.
Slavin congratulates a scholarship recipient.
