  • Zapol and former colleague receive Inventor of the Year award
    Warren M. Zapol, MD, chief of MGH Anesthesia and Critical Care, and Claes Frostell, MD, PhD, of the Karolinska Institute in Sweden, received the 2003 Inventor of the Year award June 4 in Washington. The researchers were honored for their invention of a system to safely deliver inhaled nitric oxide gas to treat a number of dangerous lung conditions.
  • The gift of time: MGH thanks contributions of volunteers
    Cool temperatures and an all-too-predictable rain didn't keep MGHers away from gathering under the Bulfinch Tent to offer thanks to an essential part of the MGH team — its volunteers — at the annual MGH Volunteer Recognition Day Award Ceremony June 4.
  • MGH honors community women as role models of good health
    A marathon runner with multiple sclerosis, a North End resident who organizes holiday benefits for needy families, a cancer survivor who helps senior citizens stay healthy — these three women are among seven community residents honored by the MGH as "role models of good health." More than 500 area women gathered May 29, for the third annual "Celebrating Women: Leading a Vibrant, Healthy Life" event presented by MGH Community Health Associates.
  • LOS at an all-time low
    The length of stay (LOS) rate was at an all-time low during the month of April. According to Peter L. Slavin, MD, president of the MGH, the LOS rate for April was 5.44 days, which is .35 under budget and the lowest LOS rate in the MGH's history. May's LOS also was below average at 5.62 days.
  • Celtics salute the heroes among us
    At each home game since 1997, the Boston Celtics have saluted the "Heroes Among Us"
    who have made overwhelming contributions to the lives of others and to society.
    On April 10, the Celtics recognized the Silber family parents Sharon and Jason, daughter Karen and her husband Michael and their son Brad for the establishment of the Brian Silber Memorial Fund, which has raised more than $500,000 for the Brian Silber Spine Tumor Clinic at the MGH.
