The Alliance for the Commonwealth and the Massachusetts Port Authority (Massport) recently honored the Partners International Program with a Services Export Achievement Award. This honor is bestowed annually to a Massachusetts exporter of services that has increased or retained jobs in the state by penetrating new international markets and demonstrating creative solutions to the challenges of alliances in overcoming the inherent risks of exporting.

"We are delighted to receive this award, which recognizes the significant role that Partners physicians and hospitals play in attracting international business to the commonwealth," says David Jones, director of the International Program. "By exporting our knowledge and expertise in patient care, medical research and education, Partners contributes to Boston's reputation as an international center of the 'knowledge industry.' This translates into jobs, investment and other regional economic benefits."

According to John P. LaWare, chairman of the Alliance for the Commonwealth, the extent of the Partners "exports" and their economic impact had not been fully appreciated. "Health care has long been a major contributor to our region's economic growth, but it is not the first industry that comes to mind when one thinks of global commerce," says LaWare. "Partners HealthCare has met the challenge of exporting a service that is knowledge-based and reliant on fixed facilities through a wide range of innovative activities. The judges were impressed by the use of overseas resources for research collaboration, sources of staff and for markets to use Boston-based services."

Jones adds, "We are especially pleased to be recognized because it is the first time a health care organization has received this award."
