  • MGH surgeons star in webcast debut
    Minimally invasive surgery is the wave of the future. It requires smaller and fewer incisions, utilizes the latest in medical technology and results in a shorter and less painful recovery for patients. The MGH demonstrated this innovative type of surgery to an Internet audience of about 1,400 viewers June 17, with the hospital's first live web broadcast.
  • Experimental imaging technique details spread of prostate cancer
    A study conducted at the MGH and a Dutch hospital finds that a new MRI technique may be able precisely to identify the spread of prostate cancer to lymph nodes. Published in the June 19 issue of the New England Journal of Medicine, the report details how high-resolution MR studies using an iron-oxide-containing contrast agent accurately localized tumor metastases. The imaging agent currently is being evaluated for FDA approval.
  • MGH Board of Trustees approves revised mission
    As the MGH embarks on an intensivestrategic planning effort to determine its future direction, the MGH Board of Trustees voted June 20 to approve revisions to the hospital's mission statement and guiding principles. According to Allison Rimm, vice president of MGH External Affairs and co-chair of the Strategic Planning Committee, the timing of the approved revisions is significant to help drive the strategic planning efforts.
  • Altshuler selected for new genome institute
    MGH geneticist and endocrinologist David Altshuler, MD, PhD, recently was named one of four core faculty members for a new genome research institute. Known as the Broad Institute, the new facility, which is a collaborative effort between the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) and Harvard University, will be located in the Kendall Square area of Cambridge.
  • Celebrating 10 years of saving lives
    The MGH Bone Marrow Transplant Program commemorated its 10th anniversary June 18 with a special program, "Celebrating 10 years of Patient Care and Research," followed by a reception in the Cox Lobby.
  • FYI poster addresses patient safety
    To gear up for the Joint Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations (JCAHO) survey this fall, the next in a series of FYI posters was distributed throughout the hospital this week.
  • Bike safety leads to summer safety
    The MGH Chelsea HealthCare Center hosted its annual "Safety on Wheels, Safety in Summer" family fair and bike rodeo June 21 at the health center. Families from Chelsea and surrounding areas came to learn about home, water, fire, sun and car safety tips.
