Medical director, nurse coordinator named to MGH/MGPO International Program

The MGH / Massachusetts General Physicians Organization (MGPO) International Program recently added two new positions – Timothy E. Guiney, MD, of MGH Cardiology, as medical director, and Leila E. Carbunari, RN, as international nurse coordinator.

"I've never had a dull day at the MGH, and among the reasons for that have been my experiences with international patients from all areas – India, Pakistan, the Middle East, Canada, Mexico and southern Europe – especially Greece and Italy," he says.

Peter Slavin, MD, MGPO CEO, adds: "Tim is a terrific choice, both because of his stature within the institution and his extensive experience working with international patients."

Guiney praised the selection of Carbunari for the position of international nurse coordinator. "Leila is a native Arabic speaker who has an unusual ability to connect with people," he says.

Carbunari feels that her new role will help give nursing a more active presence in working with international patients. "I feel that I will serve as a liaison between patients and the hospital staff to help meet the needs of both parties," she says.

To build the program, Guiney will expand its outreach and marketing efforts. "One of the major challenges will be to coordinate patient amenities such as lodging, transportation and interpreter services," he says.

Guiney and the staff at the Partners International Program have begun to work with organizations such as Massport, the Boston Chamber of Commerce, hotels and other business groups to improve the experience for international patients and families. He plans to coordinate closely with the Partners International Program under the leadership of David Jones and Ed McCarthy. Guiney says he also intends to call upon his colleagues in many areas around the MGH to extend the program throughout the hospital.

For more information about the program, call Guiney at 726-5514.
