  • Diabetes drug may help to treat AIDS-related syndrome
    A pilot study using metformin, a drug used to treat type 2 diabetes, indicates that the medication may be useful in treating HIV lipodsytrophy, a disorder of fat metabolism that occurs in people with AIDS, particularly those taking combination antiretroviral treatment.
  • Patient expresses gratitude
    James J. Mongan, MD, president of the MGH, often receives thank you letters from grateful patients. In one such letter, a patient writes: "Dear Dr. Mongan: We are writing to convey our heartfelt gratitude to the extraordinary staff of Massachusetts General Hospital, who have helped us through a medically complex and emotionally profound experience...."
  • Nominations for the Nathaniel Bowditch Prize
    Nominations are now being accepted for the inaugural Nathaniel Bowditch Prize to be awarded each year by the MGH Board of Trustees. The $5,000 prize will be given to a person — clinician or nonclinician — who has made a significant contribution to improving quality of care at the hospital while reducing the cost of such care.
  • Driving spine tumors away
    The organizers of the third annual Brian D. Silber Memorial Golf Tournament raised more than $90,000 for spine tumor research at the Brian D. Silber Spine Tumor Clinic at the MGH.
  • New president of Dana-Farber
    Edward Benz, MD, recently was named as new president of the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute and chief executive of Dana-Farber/Partners CancerCare, succeeding David G. Nathan, MD, who is retiring. Benz will begin at Dana-Farber this fall.
  • JCAHO training sessions
    In preparation for the Joint Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations (JCAHO) visit to take place this fall, mandatory training sessions will be offered for infection control and fire safety.
  • MGHers walk for AIDS
    Approximately 100 members of Partners HealthCare System and the MGH participated in the AIDS Walk Boston June 4. Partners received Gold Status, which means the team was among the top 20 teams for fundraising.
