  • Lunch is served: Monthly forum promotes discussion
Peter L. Slavin, MD, has a busy schedule. Since he took on the role of president of the MGH in January, his daily routine usually involves back-to-back meetings, phone calls and other responsibilities required to oversee the smooth operation of New England's largest and oldest teaching hospital. His calendar, however, has a special date marked once a month, reserving time for Slavin to have a leisurely lunch with a select group of movers and shakers at the hospital MGH employees.
  • MGH holds successful bone marrow donor drive
Five years ago, Jackie McLoon received a call from a staff member at the HLA (human leukocyte antigens) Registry with the National Marrow Donor Program. She was informed that she was a bone marrow match for a young patient who was the same age as her son. McLoon did not hesitate to become this young boy's donor and probably his last hope for survival. Since the successful match, McLoon now helps coordinate bone marrow drives. She recently helped out at a bone marrow drive sponsored by the MGH Bone Marrow Transplant team and Northeastern University physician assistants class.
  • Dog days of summer: Pet therapy brings smiles
Meetings at the MGH have gone to the dogs or so it seemed during a recent Patient Care Services Executive Committee meeting in the Trustees Room. Tabor, a black Labrador retriever, was part of a follow-up presentation about the MGH Pet Therapy Program pilot.
  • Cooper to receive national anesthesia award
The American Association of Nurse Anesthetists (AANA) recently announced that Jeffrey Cooper, PhD, corporate director of MGH Biomedical Engineering, will receive the Public Interest in Anesthesia Award. The Public Interest in Anesthesia Award recognizes individuals who have made outstanding contributions in the area of anesthesia patient safety and the promotion of the quality of anesthesia care.
  • MGHers go wild over Bon Jovi
Many MGH employees hoped that July 21 would be their lucky day. They had entered a raffle to win tickets to see the rock band Bon Jovi in concert with Sheryl Crow and the Goo Goo Dolls July 22 at Gillette Stadium.
  • JCAHO tip of the week
Surveyors from the Joint Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations (JCAHO) will be visiting the MGH Sept. 15 through 19. In preparation for the survey, Hotline will be featuring a tip of the week. The tip will contain information that all MGHers should know for the survey.
