PACE labels
make a world of difference
For years, MGH employees have used a cumbersome machine called an addressograph
to stamp patients' blue cards for lab tests and specimens. The only alternative
to using the addressograph has been to hand write the information on the
blue card. Because of the PACE (Patient Administrative Cycle Enhancement)
project, both of these methods will no longer be necessary.
The MGH and Massachusetts General Physicians Organization practices and
some ancillary departments that use the IDX system are in the process
of transitioning to using computer-generated labels on requisitions and
specimens. Some practices have already made the change to labels. The
practices that do not use the IDX system will continue to order tests
the same way they do now.
Using labels eliminates the unclear blue card stamps or the possibility
of poor handwriting. Having clear information will help lab staff process
tests more
efficiently, and as a result, the labels should improve the quality and
safety of patient care. The MGH Vincent Gynecology Oncology Service began
using labels in May. Aimee Fitzgerald, a medical assistant for the service,
says the labels ensure that patient information is accurate.
Convenience is another benefit of the labels. In the past, practice staff
instructed patients without blue cards to go to Registration for a replacement
card. The staff needed the card to stamp lab test or specimen forms. Now,
practice staff can print and attach a label
saving patients a trip to Registration.
Labels also save time for staff members who no longer need to use the
addressograph or hand write patient information. Practices are able to
prepare labels before patients come for their appointment. In addition,
labels save time by eliminating the need to redo forms because of an illegible
stamp.
"We love the labels because they help us check in patients quickly,
and they print out faster and more quietly," adds Kahdija Ibnoueddas,
check-in coordinator for the MGH Vincent Gynecology Oncology Service.
