MGH Payroll works around the clock

081399payroll.jpg (23198 bytes)Harvey Simon, left, of MGH Payroll, works diligently to repair the Payroll Department's machinery, which recently has been malfunctioning. This machinery processes all of the paychecks that are distributed to MGHers. Employees may not realize it, but in the last few weeks Payroll staff have had to manually sign, fold and stuff all paychecks, which amounts to more than 10,000 envelopes.

"In my 30 years in doing this job – nine of those years at the MGH – I have not missed a payroll, and I don't ever plan to," says John Seale, director of MGH Payroll.

Jadwiga "Aggie" Knight, manager of MGH Payroll, says that, some nights in recent weeks, she has stayed at the office until midnight to manually stuff checks with her staff. "It's all part of the job," she says. Knight has been working at the MGH for 33 years and knows the importance of making sure that paychecks are delivered to MGHers every week.

"Everyone here is very dedicated," says Seale. "It is part of our professional pride."
