  • Awareness is key in helping prevent ovarian cancer deaths
    Madelyn DeLeo, of Bristol, R.I., is an advocate for ovarian cancer awareness   she has had the disease twice. DeLeo was first diagnosed and treated in 1979. Recently, DeLeo found herself with a recurrence of cancer. That is when she decided to return to the MGH for treatment.
  • Documenting medical history: MGH physicians commission an Ether Dome mural
    Thousands of visitors each year pass through the doors of the MGH Ether Dome to gaze upon the room where one of the most monumental moments in medical history took place  – the first successful public demonstration of the use of ether to produce anesthesia for surgery. Soon a full-scale mural, commemorating that significant moment, will be painted on the walls of the Ether Dome.
  • Medicine's greatest gift (Reprinted from Hotline, Oct. 16, 1996)
    More than 150 years ago, in the operating theater on the top floor of the MGH's Bulfinch Building, one of the greatest moments in medicine occurred. On Oct. 16, 1846, William T.G. Morton, a Boston dentist, demonstrated the use of ether during surgery – ending the indescribable pain and the overwhelming dread that had been associated with the surgeon's knife.
  • The Lock Monsters help the Angel Fund
    The Lowell Lock Monsters hockey team presented proceeds from their St. Patrick's Day dinner dance and silent auction to the Angel Fund for ALS (Lou Gherig's Disease) Sept. 10 at the CNY.
  • Three-dimensional imaging helps improve patient care
    In February, the MGH Radiology Department introduced a new service to compliment its range of imaging services – three-dimensional imaging. Under the direction of Gordon Harris, PhD, the new 3-D Clinical Service helps improve the imaging needs of MGH clinicians with cutting-edge technology.
  • Developmental Biology and Cancer symposium
    Kurt Isselbacher, MD, director of the MGH Cancer Center, welcomed physicians and scientists to a recent symposium entitled "Developmental Biology and Cancer," hosted by the MGH Cancer Center and sponsored by the Massachusetts Biomedical Research Corporation.
