• Ether Day 1999: Three to mark 60 years of service
  The MGH celebrates Ether Day Oct. 15, honoring 1,531 employees and staff who have worked at the hospital for 5, 10, 15, 20, 25, 30, 40, 50 and 60 years. Departments will give employees pins and colored flowers distinguishing years of service.

• Telemedicine can be used for accurate diagnosis of stroke symptoms
  In a study in the October issue of Stroke, MGH researchers show that new technologies in telemedicine – the practice of medicine from remote locations over phone lines – can be used to shorten the time required for an accurate diagnosis, especially for patients far from major medical centers.

• Outpatient practice support training program
  A group of 16 outpatient practice secretaries gathered Oct. 7 with their practice managers to celebrate the success of a mentorship program that began in April.

• Walk raises money for MGH Brain Tumor Center
  Walkers came from several New England states recently to raise money for the MGH Brain Tumor Center at the first "Strides of Survival" walk in Newburyport, Mass. The pledges for the walk totaled $22,500 to benefit brain tumor research and services at the hospital.

• Orthopaedic Oncology Surgery guide for patients
  Patients who come to the MGH with a bone or soft tissue tumor now have an easy-to-understand resource with the Orthopaedic Oncology Surgery guidebook.

• The MGH represents Boston well in the eyes of a Texan patient
