  • Bringing history to life: Ether Day painting unveiled
    Oct. 16, 1856 marks perhaps the most celebrated page of MGH history: the first successful public demonstration of the use of ether as a surgical anesthetic. An open house – held in the Ether Dome Oct. 16  – featured the unveiling of a life-sized mural depicting the events of that same day.
  • Ether Day tradition honors employees
    Glimpses of MGH history reveal themselves each year on Ether Day as the hospital applauds its employees – some of whom have worked at the MGH for more than half their lives – for their years of service.
  • MGHers gather for Unity Service
    One month after the Sept. 11 tragedy, MGHers gathered in the Bulfinch Tent Oct. 11 for a service of readings, prayers and music to mourn the losses and unite in spirit.
  • Benefits open enrollment
    Open enrollment will be held at the MGH Oct. 23 through Nov. 6 for weekly-paid, benefits-eligible employees, with changes effective Jan. 1, 2002.
  • Remembering the tragedy of Sept. 11th: An employee's story
    The terrorist attacks of Sept. 11 forever will be marked as one of the most ragic, life-changing events in the history of this nation. DMAT and IMSuRT member Tony Forgione, LPN, of MGH Same-Day Surgery, shared with Hotline his thoughts about his memorable experience while deployed in New York City.
  • Partners opens new research facility
    The first Partners HealthCare research facility to house scientists from both the MGH and BWH officially was opened Oct. 11. The new five-story, 123,000 square-foot building is located at 65 Lansdowne St. in Cambridge, at University Park near the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.
  • United Way campaign kicks off Oct. 25
    The 2001 United Way campaign will kick off Oct. 25. MGH employees will receive pledge cards with their paychecks at that time. MGHers who donate will be eligible for dozens of raffle prizes, and all surplus funds raised above the campaign goal will assist MGH Social Services in providing extra care to patients and families in need.
