  • Seminar addresses how to avoid the flu without a flu shot
    With flu season coming and a shortage of vaccines, people from all age groups are concerned about protecting themselves from the flu. MGH Senior HealthWISE and the Blum Patient and Family Learning Center recently addressed this topic at one of the monthly Senior HealthWISE seminars. "Flu Season Without a Flu Shot: What Do I Need to Know?" held Nov. 16 in the Walcott Conference Rooms, was tailored for seniors from the surrounding community, but the information on flu protection can be applied to the MGH community as a whole.
  • Memorial service provides comfort and support
    The MassGeneral Hospital for Children Comfort and Support After Loss Committee held the 13th annual Pediatric, Neonatal and Obstetric Bereavement Program Nov. 7 in the O'Keeffe Auditorium. This service is dedicated to those who have experienced the death of an infant, child or adolescent and also includes families who have experienced miscarriage, stillbirth and neonatal loss.
  • Clean hands help patients
    The results are in for the third quarter MGH Hand Hygiene Clean Sweepstakes, and eight patient care units have been rewarded for having the highest hand hygiene compliance before and after patient contact. Congratulations go to Bigelow 9, Phillips 21, Bigelow 10, White 12, Ellison 17, Phillips 22, Blake 12 and Blake 6.
  • National Case Management Week recognized at MGH
    The MGH Case Management Department recognized National Case Management Week Oct. 13 to 16. This year's events followed the Case Management Society of America's theme for the week, "Case Managers, the Passion for Caring; the Power of Collaboration; the Promise of Hope."
  • Stewart Memorial scholarships presented
    Steven Mikula, a construction manager in the MGH Planning and Construction Office, and Denis Garriepy of Walsh Brothers Construction Co., were the recent recipients of the fifth annual Clifford D. Steward Memorial Scholarship.
  • STARs shine in MGH Surgery
    The MGH Department of Surgery recognized its "STAR" employees at the second annual STAR award ceremony and luncheon Nov. 1 in the Sweet Conference Room.
  • Smile for the camera
    New England Patriots line backer, Willie McGinest, left a trail of smiles when he came to the MGH to visit young patients and their families Nov. 9.
  • In memoriam
    Daniel G. Heller, MD, a pediatrician for MassGeneral Hospital for Children, died of a heart attack Nov. 12 at the age of 60. Heller had been in private practice since 1976 but continued to play an active role in teaching medical students and residents.
