National Case Management Week recognized at MGH

The MGH Case Management Department recognized National Case Management Week Oct. 13 to 16. This year's events followed the Case Management Society of America's theme for the week, "Case Managers, the Passion for Caring; the Power of Collaboration; the Promise of Hope."

Throughout the week, the MGH Case Management Celebration Committee provided educational opportunities for the MGH community about the Case Management Department, post-acute hospital discharge options, financial responsibilities when hospitalized, and alternative and complementary therapies.

The department sponsored a Case Management information table Oct. 12 and 14 in the Main Corridor. Brochures about the department and commonly asked questions about post-acute services and Medicare-specific information were available. In addition, the third annual Case Management variety/change show was held Oct. 14. Music, laughter and levity filled the Meltzer Auditorium at Mass Eye and Ear Infirmary as case managers and other MGH staff performed skits and hosted a fashion show of African attire. A slide show completed the event.

The recognition week continued Nov. 2 when the department offered an educational seminar, "Alternative Therapies," that combined information about complementary and alternative therapies and conventional Western medicine. Lucy Chen, MD, an MGH anesthesiologist, discussed acupuncture and acupressure. Regina Powers, RN, MSN, an MGH trauma nurse coordinator, provided information about homeopathy, Chinese medicine and yoga. Catherine Ulbricht, PharmD, senior MGH pharmacist, discussed the safety of herbs and supplements.

For more information about the department, call Anna Carson at (617) 726-8184 or Melissa Robinson, RN, at (617) 724-7474.
