Boston Evening Medical Center becomes MGH Back Bay

In May 1998, the MGH acquired Boston Evening Medical Center (BEMC). This past fall, BEMC was renamed MGH Back Bay. With the new name comes a new vision.

"We want to be thought of as MGH in the Back Bay," says Peggy Carolan, executive director of MGH Back Bay. "While serving as a gateway to specialty care at the MGH, this facility also provides outstanding health care services that are convenient for people who live, work and go to school in the neighborhood. We offer a family-practice model of care in a quiet and supportive atmosphere."

Adds Holly Atlas, MD, new medical director of MGH Back Bay, "We have a wonderful opportunity to build on the strong foundation of the Boston Evening Medical Center and to continue the tradition of dedicated physicians providing first-class health care."

Founded in 1927 by Morris Cohen, MD, the BEMC has a long and distinguished history of providing services to community workers and residents. Now as MGH Back Bay, the health center will continue the tradition of providing high-quality health care to the Back Bay area.

MGH Back Bay offers primary care, women's health and subspecialty services such as cardiology and dermatology. The physicians and medical specialists along with a nurse practitioner and a nutritionist work together to provide comprehensive care.

Located at 388 Commonwealth Ave. near Massachusetts Avenue, MGH Back Bay is reached easily by car and by public transportation. The Hynes Convention Center stop on the Green Line is the closest subway stop. The facility offers extended hours Tuesday and Thursday evenings until 8 pm. A physician provides on-call coverage 24 hours a day, seven days a week. For more information, call 267-7171.
