Deck the Halls
with boughs of holly ... carefully
The holidays can be a joyous time to celebrate with family and friends.
Unfortunately, it also is a time of increased risk for burns and house
fires. As stockings are hung by the chimney with care, fabulous feasts
are prepared, lights are hung and trees are adorned, specialists in the
MGH Burn Center have a few tips to help everyone stay safe this holiday
season.
- Avoid the use of aluminum roasting pans unless they have supports
with handles. The bottoms of these pans are weak, and when a heavy turkey
is removed, the pan tends to crease and crack. The result can be a severe
grease burn, usually to the feet.
- Avoid wearing loose-fitting clothing around the stove that could be
ignited by a burner.
- Keep pot handles turned in so they are less likely to be knocked
over and children cannot pull the contents over onto themselves.
- Be careful with candles keep them confined to the kitchen and
dining room. Never leave them unattended.
- Check the quality of the holiday lights make sure the cords
aren't frayed.
- Keep trees watered. If they begin to dry out, do not turn on the lights.
- Make sure all holiday lights are turned off before leaving home or
going to bed.
