What's Happening

Secretaries Day celebration
The MGH will celebrate Secretaries Day April 21 by hosting a luncheon for secretarial and support staff, 11:30 am to 1:30 pm, under the Bulfinch Tents. The Pamela J. Ellis Memorial Secretarial Award will be presented at 12:30 pm. For evening staff, a reception will take place April 20, 6 to 8 pm, in the East Garden Room, located beneath the stairs across from the Eat Street Cafe. For more information, call 4-7835.

Take a child to work
Take Our Children to Work Day will take place April 22, 8 am to 3:30 pm, at the MGH. The event is an opportunity for children ages 9 to 14 to spend a day in the workplace and see women working in nontraditional roles. Activities include a continental breakfast, a scavenger hunt, tours of the Eat Street Cafe and kitchen and a fair in the Warren Lobby with interactive booths about various careers. Employees who would like to bring a child should contact their supervisors and consider the safety, access and appropriateness of having a child in their work areas.

To pre-register, send the following information to Amy Vacchina by e-mail at avacchina@partners.org or by fax at 6-6989: child's name, age, employee sponsor's name, department, telephone extension, relationship to child and any special considerations. Registration forms also are available at Human Resources offices on White 14, at 75 Blossom Court and CNY, seventh floor. For information, call 4-7835.

Dental Group booth
The MGH Dental Group will host an information booth April 21, from 8 am to 5 pm, in the Central Lobby. Staff from the practice will answer questions and provide educational materials about dental health and awareness topics – from brushing to bleaching to a child's first dental visit. Those who stop by will also have a chance to enter a raffle for an electric toothbrush. The MGH Dental Group, located in the WACC 230, is open Monday to Friday, 8 am to 5 pm. The practice serves both inpatients and outpatients and offers a complete range of dental care from cleanings and fillings to dentures/plates and oral cancer screenings. Chelsea offers immunizations for kids
In recognition of National Immunization Week, April 18 to 24, the Pediatric and Adolescent Medicine staff at MGH
·Chelsea HealthCare Center will help parents review their children's immunization records and provide any needed inoculations. This free service will be available from 9 am to noon, in the first floor entryway area at the health center, located at 151 Everett Ave., Chelsea. Vaccines will be available for such diseases as measles, mumps, rubella, tetanus, diphtheria, pertussis, polio, hepatitis B, haemophilis B and varicella. For more information, call 889-8520.

Health Awareness Day
The MGH
·Charlestown HealthCare Center will host a Health Awareness Day April 30, 11 am to 3 pm, at Charlestown Navy Yard, Building 149. The event will feature free health screenings for cholesterol, diabetes and blood pressure as well as prizes, healthy food samples and education booths. For more information, call 4-8197.

Cancer support programs
The MGH Cancer Center Patient and Family Support Program will offer the following seminars for cancer patients, family, friends and staff in the Cancer Resource Room on Cox 1: "Stretch into Spring: The Benefits of Maintaining Flexibility," April 21, noon to 1 pm, and "My Throat is Sore, My Mouth Hurts and I Can't Taste: What Should I Eat? A Discussion for Patients with Head and Neck Cancer," April 22, 10 to 11 am. For more information, call 4-1822.

Clinical research ethics seminar
The Clinical Research Program will host the second in its series of ethics seminars April 22, 11:45 am to 1 pm, in the Wellman Conference Room. The topic "Accountability in Clinical Investigations: Lessons from the Archives of Clinical Research," will address the ethical responsibilities involved in clinical trials by using case studies to illustrate breaches in ethical and scientific principles. OT Awareness Day
To recognize Occupational Therapy Month, the MGH Occupational Therapy Department will host information tables and interactive displays demonstrating various aspects of the OT practice April 21, 11 am to 1 pm, in the Central Lobby. Features include a computer station demonstrating ergonomic principles, a display of splints and adaptive equipment and a grip strength contest. For more information, call 6-9534.

Gay and lesbian issues in the HMS community
"Out in the Harvard Medical Community: A Town Meeting about Gay and Lesbian Issues" will take place April 22, 5 to 6 pm, in the Walter Amphitheater at Harvard Medical School, 260 Longwood Ave. All members of the Harvard medical community are invited.
