What's Happening
MGH in the news
In December 1997, a film crew from the ABC News program "20/20" began following
the first-ever clinical pastoral education (CPE) fellows at the MGH. The resulting feature
on spirituality and medicine is scheduled to air on "20/20" April 4 at 9 pm on
ABC (Channel 5 locally).
The CPE program believed to be the first of its type
in the country was developed and run by Sister Sheila Hammond and Rev. Mary
Martha Thiel, directors of the MGH Chaplaincy. Two fellows, Mary Kraft, MD, an
anesthesiologist, and Virginia Harlan, LICSW, a social worker at the MGH·Charlestown HealthCare
Center, were sponsored by the Kenneth B. Schwartz Center. The MGH Department of Nursing
awarded two fellowships to Donna McKay, RN, from Ellison 7, and Michael Wilson, RN, from
the Burn Unit.
Take a child to work
Take Our Children to Work Day will take place April 22, 8 am to 3:30 pm, at the MGH.
Adapted from National Take Our Daughters to Work Day, the event is an opportunity for
children ages 9 to 14 to spend a day in the workplace and see women working in
nontraditional roles. Activities include a continental breakfast, a scavenger hunt, tours
of the Eat Street Cafe and kitchen, a fair in the Warren Lobby with interactive booths
about various careers, a radiology presentation, as well as prizes and certificates
awarded at the end of the day. Employees who would like to bring a child should contact
their supervisors and consider the safety, access and appropriateness of having a child in
their work areas. To pre-register, send child's name, age, employee sponsor's name,
department, telephone extension, relationship to child and any special considerations to
