Remembering the children Kathie Pazola, RN, of the Pediatric Nursing Service, keeps thoughts of her young patients close to her heart. Speaking at the Pediatric Memorial Service Nov. 1, she shared the words of an adolescent patient, Derek, who a month before his death wrote in his journal: "It is love that connects my soul to everyone else's. And it is love that will let me live on in the hearts of others." Pazola was one of several employees who joined dozens of parents and families in remembering the children who have died while they were patients at the MGH. Sponsored by the MGH Pediatric, Neonatal, Obstetric Bereavement Program, the annual service is meant to provide comfort and support to those who have experienced the loss of a child. In addition to several readings by employees and parents, the service included songs performed by the Wakefield Repertory Theater, slide presentations of children and adolescents, and a ceremony in which parents read aloud the names of their children. Following the program, the audience moved outside to the Bulfinch Lawn to blow bubbles in honor of their young loved ones. As Pazola gave closing remarks, she expressed gratitude to Derek and all her patients. "It was a privilege to care for you and know you, and we thank you for the life lessons that you taught us."
