Test your infection control IQ

In recognition of Infection Control Week, Oct. 17 to 24, the MGH Infection Control Unit is promoting education hospitalwide with the following quiz for MGHers.

1. Hands should be washed

  1. before and after direct patient contact
  2. after removing gloves
  3. before/after eating, drinking, smoking
  4. after using the toilet
  5. whenever there is any doubt about contamination
  6. all of the above

2. Occupational Health screening for TB (tuberculosis) is required

  1. every month
  2. every year
  3. only when exposed to TB

3. Personal protective equipment (i.e. gloves, gowns, goggles, etc.) should be worn

  1. every time you enter a patient room
  2. only if there is an isolation sign on the door
  3. for potential contact with blood, body fluid, mucous membrane, nonintact skin

4. In the case of an occupational exposure to blood

  1. scream for help and call your doctor
  2. wash the area, call Occupational Health for immediate treatment
  3. wash your hands and fill out an incident report
