101698T.gif (1063 bytes) It was a tough decision for a jury of seven distinguished design experts, but the winners of the Charles/MGH T station design ideas competition were selected Oct. 9. Sixteen entries were chosen
five for first awards, six for honorable mention and five for citations among the 133 submissions of ideas to renovate the ailing subway station.

The entries were judged on originality and quality of design; successful integration with adjacent buildings and activities; provision of a renewed sense of purpose to the public spaces; celebration of the Charles Circle area as a gateway to Boston; ease of movement for pedestrians, automobiles and trains; and limitation of train noise.

These winning ideas will be considered in the ultimate design of the new station. The competition was meant as a prelude to the formal solicitation by the MBTA of design proposals for the renovation.

The MGH has been working closely with the MBTA and a coalition of community groups and institutions to acquire support for renovating the station, creating better accessibility for MGH patients as well as employees, staff and the general public.
