What's happening MGH·Revere hosts breast cancer awareness event
The MGH·Revere HealthCare Center will be cohosting with Robert Haas, Jr., mayor of Revere
"Making Waves on the Boulevard" Oct. 3, 2 to 10 pm, on the beach area outside of
the health center, 300 Ocean Ave., Revere. In recognition of Breast Cancer Awareness
Month, the event will feature entertainment by Grammy Award winners Thelma Houston and
Evelyn "Champagne" King. Breast cancer education materials will be available as
well as tours of the health center's mammography suite. For more information, call Eileen

Walk to fight breast cancer
MGHers are invited to join teams from MGH·Charlestown, MGH·Chelsea, MGH·Revere, Boston
Evening Medical Center and the North End Community Health Center for the five-mile
American Cancer Society's Making Strides Against Breast Cancer walk, Oct. 4. The walk
starts between 8 and 10 am at the Hatch Shell on the Esplanade. To walk with the health

Programs for cancer patients
The MGH Cancer Center Patient and Family Support Program will sponsor the following
programs in the Cancer Resource Room on Cox 1: "Care of the Spirit in Cancer
Care," Sept. 29, noon to 1 pm. "New Cancer Drugs and New Clinical Trials,"
Oct. 1, noon to 1 pm; and "Breast Cancer: The Old and New," Oct. 6, 2 to 3 pm.

Peripheral vascular disease screening
The MGH Vascular Radiology and Vascular Surgery departments will host a peripheral
vascular disease (PVD) leg screening Oct. 2, 9 am to 3 pm, in the Wellman Conference Room.
For people who suffer from leg pain, the screening will help determine their risk for PVD,
which is common among people over the age of 50 and among those who have diabetes, smoke
or have high blood pressure or cholesterol levels. The screening is part of the Legs for
Life national screening program, sponsored by the Society of Cardiovascular and

Crime Prevention Fair
The MGH Police, Security, Parking and Photography Department is hosting a Crime Prevention
Fair Oct. 1, 11 am to 2 pm, under the Bulfinch tent on the main campus and Oct. 2, 11:30
am to 1:30 pm, CNY, Building 149. The event will feature safety and crime prevention
demonstrations and information exhibits as well as displays by other MGH departments,
local law enforcement agencies and other vendors. Music, popcorn, games and giveaways will
add to the festivities along with a visit from McGruff the Crime Dog. For more

Change of date
The panel discussion sponsored by the MGH Office for Women's Careers entitled
"Mastering Academic Achievement: How and When to Establish Independence as an
Investigator" has been rescheduled from Sept. 29 at 4 pm to Dec. 1, 4 to 5:30 pm in

A Joint Parade walk to benefit the Arthritis
Foundation
MGHers are invited to join employees from BWH and other Partners affiliates in the
five-mile A Joint Parade walk, Oct. 18, starting at noon at Boston City Hall Plaza.
Partners HealthCare System is a corporate sponsor of the walk, which benefits the

Honoring the 30th anniversary of affirmative
action
Harvard Medical School (HMS) and the Harvard School of Dental Medicine (HSDM) will host a
presentation in recognition of the 30th anniversary of affirmative action, "A
Recommitment to Diversity at HMS/HSDM," Oct. 2, 4 to 6 pm. The event will be held at
the Daniel C. Tosteson Medical Education Center at 260 Longwood Ave., Boston. For more

Latino Month celebration
In recognition of October as Latino Month, the Association of Multicultural Members of
Partners invites MGHers and other Partners employees to join in a celebration Oct. 8, noon
to 1:30 pm, at the Learning and Diversity Office, Charles River Plaza, 185 Cambridge St.,
Room 105. The event will feature guest speaker Dharma Cortes, PhD, of the Department of
Social Medicine at Harvard Medical School. A luncheon with a Latin flair will be served.

Molecular course
The Molecular Neurogenetics Unit and the Clinical Research Program (CRP) will sponsor
"Molecular Genetics and Disease Mechanisms," a course to assist faculty or
post-doctorate level scientists in using a molecular genetic approach to innovate
research. The class will meet Oct. 6 and 20 and Nov. 3 and 17, 4 to 6:30 pm, in the
Lawrence House Conference Room. A $50 materials fee and application is required to enroll.
