• Ringing in the New Year
  While many people ushered in 2005 with noisemakers, champagne toasts and festive parties, Lori Mancaniello rang in the New Year by welcoming baby Gianna into the world Jan. 1 at 4:15 am. Gianna had the honor of being the MGH's first baby of the new year.
  

• Ways for MGHers to support tsunami relief efforts
  As newscasts replay the devastating aftermath of the powerful earthquake and tsunami that hit southern Asia and eastern Africa Dec. 26, members of the MGH community have expressed strong interest in helping the survivors by offering to send money or in-kind items such as food or clothing.
  

• Tracing the life cycle of a manmade disease
  A remarkable story of how a new disease was inadvertently caused by successful medical treatment, ultimately understood and eventually defeated by scientific innovation has been told by a major player in the process. In the December issue of Clinical Orthopedics and Related Research, William Harris, MD, DSc, of MGH Orthopaedics described how the development of total hip replacement led to an unexpected problem, erosion of bone adjacent to the implant, and how his team and others identified the process underlying that breakdown and helped to develop new materials that avoid the problem.
  

• Chelsea High School principal works out with Stay in Shape
  Chelsea High School Principal Mort Orlov proved himself to be a good sport when he joined Stay in Shape's last workout of the semester Dec. 15. Stay in Shape is a fitness program for girls at Chelsea High School run by MGH Community Health Associates. The program has been gaining popularity among students and has grown from six students when it started four years ago to as many as 40 during the past school year.
  

• Trip of a lifetime comes true for MGH temporary employee
  Susan "Sunny" Davidson, of the MGH Bulfinch Temporary Service, has been dreaming of a trip to Italy since she was 15 years old. And now her dream is coming true. Davidson recently was declared the winner of a silent auction fundraiser for the North End Community Health Center (NECHC), with the grand prize being two round-trip tickets and accommodations to the winner's choice of either Rome or Florence.
  

• Return of the Patriots
  The New England Patriots have started the New Year on two good notes. First, they finished their season 14 — 2 and second, they brightened the day of many pediatric patients Jan. 3 with a visit to the hospital.
  

• Team MGH and the Bruins Legends tangle for the third year
  In support of this year's MGH United Way Campaign, Team MGH will once again challenge the athletic abilities of the Bruins alumni team — the Black and Gold Legends — for a celebrity hockey game to raise money for the charity.
  

• Get a flu shot - it's not too late
  The MGH — like many hospitals throughout the region — has seen a steady increase in the number of cases of influenza since mid-December. While it is impossible at this time to predict how severe the flu season will be, it is clear that the flu season has arrived and will be here well into February and possibly later.
