• Missives on mission: MGHers share tsunami relief experiences
  It has been three weeks since a brave group of MGHers left their homes, families and jobs and traveled around the world to Southeast Asia to spend 30 days providing care to the survivors of the tragic tsunami that devastated that area Dec. 26. The MGH contingent traveled there aboard the USNS Mercy (T-AH 19) hospital ship as part of Project HOPE, an organization coordinating the deployment of health care professionals to provide medical support for the military personnel who are already serving in the relief effort.

• MGH part of new Autism Treatment Network
  The MGH recently helped establish the nation's first network of hospitals and physicians that supports collaborations to improve the treatment for autism. Called the Autism Treatment Network (ATN), this national, nonprofit organization includes physicians and health care practitioners from six leading medical centers - including the MGH - who will collaboratively evaluate the medical conditions present in young people with autism and determine best practices for their identification and treatment.

• Clean hands equal healthy patients
  The results are in for the fourth-quarter MGH Hand Hygiene Clean Sweepstakes contest, and eight patient care units have been rewarded for the most improved hand hygiene compliance before and after patient contact. Congratulations go to White 3, Ellison 6, Bigelow 7, Ellison 8, Bigelow 13, Ellison 14, Phillips 20 and White 8.

• Cold weather doesn't stop MGHers
  The MGH Hazmat Response Team held a drill Feb. 12 and became the first team in the nation to successfully test its ability to decontaminate in cold weather conditions. The Hazmat team is a volunteer group of hospital employees established to protect staff and the hospital facility from contamination and to provide decontamination of a large number of victims of a mass casualty incident or a major industrial accident in the community.

• MGH physician named medical director of Red Sox
  The World Series Champion Boston Red Sox team announced Feb. 16 that Thomas J. Gill, MD, of MGH Orthopædics, has been named medical director for the team.

• Tarbell will lead new Center for Faculty Development
  Nancy Tarbell, MD, division chief of Radiation Oncology at MassGeneral Hospital for Children, has been named director of the new MGH Center for Faculty Development. The center's mission is to assist MGHers who are Harvard Medical School (HMS) faculty members with the planning and development of their careers, with particular attention to the HMS promotion process.

• MGH introduces new "eBuy" purchasing system
  The MGH will be launching a new Partnerswide online requisitioning system March 1 that will replace all current forms of requisitioning. E-Procurement, which will be commonly
  referred to as eBuy, is a front-end system to the PeopleSoft Purchasing module.

• Herman Suit, MD, portrait unveiled
  The lobby of the Northeast Proton Therapy Center (NPTC) was filled with family, friends and colleagues Feb. 11 in celebration of Herman Suit, MD, former chief of MGH Radiation Oncology, and the unveiling of his portrait. The talented artists - Lucia and Warren Prosperi, who also created the painting in the Ether Dome - were present to witness the unveiling.
