  • Leadership meeting focuses on hospital's financial performance
While the MGH remains in a strong financial position — especially compared with other Massachusetts hospitals — some trends in recent months have caused concerns that call for measured responses to bring the hospital closer to its fiscal '05 budget. These trends and some corrective strategies were discussed at a leadership meeting March 1.
  • Homecoming: MGH Project HOPE team returns
Members of the MGH team traveled to Southern Asia to provide medical care for the victims of the tsunami disaster as part of the Project HOPE relief mission returned home to Boston this past weekend with life-changing stories they will not soon forget. Arriving on three different flights Feb. 25 and 26, the 40 exhausted team members were greeted at Logan Airport by family members and friends eager to see them.
  • Committed to keeping MGHers safe in the workplace
In a busy hospital environment like the MGH, accidents that cause injuries to employees can happen. Last year, 86 employees reported injuries resulting from slips, trips and falls in the hospital. While this number is relatively low compared to the number of employees at the hospital, the MGH is looking for ways to reduce this number and to encourage injured employees to visit Occupational Health Services.
  • Future scientists showcase their skills
The MGH/Timilty Partnership held its annual weeklong science fair at the James P. Timilty Middle School Feb. 7 to 10 with more than 600 students presenting science projects. The students from grades six through eight were judged by 60 volunteers from the MGH community, including first-time judge Alejandro Morales, MD, from the Renal Unit, and longtime judge Vincent Riggi, from MGH Respiratory Care Services.
  • A gift from the Ladies Visiting Committee
Through the generosity of the Ladies Visiting Committee (LVC), the recently opened Yawkey Center for Outpatient Care has acquired a new shuttle bus. The shuttle service, which began Feb. 28, provides transportation for patients and their families around the main campus. Wheelchair accessible, the shuttle comfortably seats 15.
  • MGH Leadership Academy introduced
The O'Keeffe Auditorium was filled Feb. 23 as managers and supervisors from throughout the hospital gathered for the launch of the MGH Leadership Academy — a new program to help managers refine their skills to become even more successful leaders.
  • Remembering David Brudnoy
More than 1,000 family members, friends, colleagues, listeners and caregivers gathered Feb. 27 at Emerson's Cutler Majestic Theatre to pay tribute to David Brudnoy. The WBZ radio talk show host, college professor, film critic and writer, who had battled — and defeated — AIDS for more than 10 years, died Dec. 9 at the MGH of a rare form of skin cancer called Merkel cell carcinoma.
  • Pam Ellis Awards
Nominations now are being accepted for the 2005 Pamela J. Ellis Memorial Secretarial Award, established in memory of Pamela J. Ellis, who served as an executive secretary at the MGH from 1992 to 1996. Ellis was known for her remarkable performance and work values during her tenure..
