Boston Neighborhood Fellows Award recipient

Described as a "selfless champion" for women living with HIV and AIDS, Sheila Davis, RN, of the Infectious Disease Division, is one of six recipients of the Boston Neighborhood Fellows Award. The award is given in recognition of creative individuals who strive to make a difference in the communities of the Greater Boston Area. Mayor Thomas Menino presented the awards at a ceremony March 8.

For the past 20 years, Davis (right) has responded to the AIDS epidemic by providing comfort and support to patients in need. By creating a revolutionary treatment information program that is culturally sensitive, she is working to improve the system of care for such patients. Davis also has started her own nonprofit organization, Sibusiso, a Zulu word meaning blessings. Its mission is to improve the lives of people infected and affected by HIV/AIDS within areas of Boston and sub-Saharan Africa who exhibit the greatest need for resources.

Founded in 1991, the Boston Neighborhood Fellows Award program honors six individuals annually and awards each $30,000 for their vital contributions. It is administered by The Philanthropic Initiative, Inc., a nonprofit organization that works with donors to help make a difference in society through strategic philanthropy.
