• Out of tragedy comes hope for a little boy
  When 17-month-old Fadhil Muammar was discharged from the MGH April 1, he left with a new lease on life — saved not only by the team of MGH and MassGeneral Hospital for Children doctors and nurses who rallied to care for him, but also, ironically, by the December tsunami that devastated so much of his southeast Asian home.

• Research building to be renamed in honor of former MGH president
  The hospital's Wellman Building will get a new identity later this month when this important MGH facility is renamed the Samuel and Paula Thier Research Building. The new name will serve as a lasting and fitting tribute to Samuel O. Thier, MD, who led both the MGH and Partners HealthCare, and his wife, Paula. Jack Connors, chairman of the Partners Board of Trustees, and his wife, Eileen, recently pledged $5 million to the MGH to name the facility in honor of the esteemed health care leader.
  

• Leadership meeting focuses on finances, facilities and fitness
  Hospital finances were a major focus of a leadership meeting held April 4 in which Katie Hope, MGH budget director, updated managers, supervisors and department heads about the year-to-date financial results for FY '05 and the operating budget schedule and process for FY '06.
  

• Melanie Bloom speaks at MGH
  Two years ago, Melanie Bloom lost her husband, NBC reporter David Bloom, while he was covering the war in Iraq. He didn't die from injuries suffered during combat. He died of a pulmonary embolism, a complication arising from deep-vein thrombosis (DVT), a medical condition that occurs when a blood clot forms in one of the large veins, usually in the lower limbs, leading to either partially or completely blocked circulation.
  

• EatWISE, Eat Smart
  Eating healthy and making smart choices is hard for many people with so many diet fads being advertised. To help older adults make the right choices, MGH Senior HealthWISE and MGH Nutrition and Food Services teamed up to offer a six-week nutrition education workshop "EatWISE, Eat Smart" at the West End Public Library.

• State House holds public hearing about disparities
  Peter L. Slavin, MD, president of the MGH, was first to participate in a day of public testimony before the Commission to Eliminate Racial and Ethnic Health Care Disparities April 4 at the State House. Slavin was invited to testify by the commission because of the leadership role the MGH has played in addressing disparities.
