Melanie
Bloom speaks at MGH
Two years ago, Melanie Bloom lost her husband, NBC reporter David Bloom,
while he was covering the war in Iraq. He didn't die from injuries suffered
during
combat. He died of a pulmonary embolism, a complication arising from deep-vein
thrombosis (DVT), a medical condition that occurs when a blood clot forms
in one of the large veins, usually in the lower limbs, leading to either
partially or completely blocked circulation.
Melanie Bloom spoke about the devastation that DVT had on her family before
a hushed and packed audience in the O'Keeffe Auditorium March 30. The
national spokesperson for the DVT Coalition, Bloom was the keynote speaker
at a symposium about DVT sponsored by the MGH Vascular Center. Other speakers
at the one-hour event included Michael Jaff, DO, (pictured at left
with Bloom), director of MGH Vascular Medicine, Stephan Wicky, MD,
of MGH Radiology, and Christopher Kwolek, MD, of MGH Vascular Surgery.
