Friendly competition gives back to the MGH

Allan Moore, MD, a junior resident in the MGH Department of Medicine, wanted to find a simple way to give something back to the MGH. With the help of Kim Cronin, donor services manager for the MGH Blood Donor Center, Moore decided to hold a friendly blood donation competition among residents and attending physicians in the Department of Medicine.

Throughout the month of May, all residents — interns, juniors and seniors — and house teaching staff can visit the Blood Donor Center and donate blood or platelets for their team. Those who are ineligible to donate can still participate by getting a buddy to donate for them. A buddy can be a co-worker, a family member or friend.

The first 200 donors from the Department of Medicine will receive a specially designed t-shirt. A plaque will be displayed in the Potts Conference Room on Bigelow 8 with the winning group.

"The goal of this challenge is to help our patients by bringing in new donors," says Moore. "I hope this competition becomes an annual event, allowing staff to give back to the hospital every year."
