• Child care at its best: MGH Backup Child Care Center
  Every working parent has experienced it: the anxiety — perhaps even guilt — that comes along with the first day care experience. How will the child adjust to spending the day with a roomful of other children? What if the child spends the whole day just crying? What if that first experience is at a backup child care center — a day care that is intended to provide only emergency, second-line care when regular child care plans fall through?

• A decade of progress: MGH salutes nurses during Nurse Recognition Week
  “This is a great place to work as a nurse,” says Janie Pealer, RN, who has worked in the MGH Renal Unit for two years. She and her colleague, Chris Pacheco, RN, of the Dialysis Unit, have worked at several other Boston area teaching hospitals and in community hospitals during their careers, but they like working at the MGH the best. Pealer and Pacheco, along with many other nurses, celebrated their numerous accomplishments during the 10th annual MGH Nurse Recognition Week, held May 2 through 6.

• Recess: MGHers take their kids to work
  “Discovering Health Care” was the theme for this year's MGH Take Our Children to Work Day held April 29. Adapted from the national Take Our Daughters to Work Day, the annual event was originally an opportunity for daughters ages 9 to 14 to spend a day in the workplace and see women working in nontraditional roles.

• NPTC patient gives hope to others
  The Northeast Proton Therapy Center (NPTC) at the MGH has provided cancer
  treatment to many grateful patients. The Morris family is especially grateful to the center after their 8-year-old son Tristan was treated for cancer of the spine. To show their gratitude to the center and Tristan's doctors, the Morris family created the Tristan's Gift of Hope Foundation to raise funds to support care and treatment of pediatric patients at the center.

• Bands, bidding and bowling benefit MGH YouthCare
  MGH YouthCare's fifth annual “Give Children a Chance” gala took place May 5 with a crowd of more than 300 guests at King's Lanes in Boston. The event was co-chaired by David Long, chief operating officer of Liberty Mutual, his wife Stephanie, Tom Hamilton of the rock band Aerosmith and his wife Terry. Doug Flutie — the famous returning New England Patriots player — provided the evening's entertainment with the Flutie Brothers Band.

• Low-fat dairy foods may help reduce men's risk of type 2 diabetes
  The consumption of low-fat dairy foods may reduce men's risk of developing type 2
  diabetes, according to a study in the May 9 issue of Archives of Internal Medicine. The report from researchers at the MGH, BWH and Harvard School of Public Health (HSPH) is the first large-scale, prospective examination of a relationship between dairy intake and diabetes risk.
