  • MGHers caught in jailbreak
    There may not have been any police escorts, sirens or handcuffs, but members of MGH leadership found themselves in the middle of a "jailbreak" May 27 as they participated in an unusual ground-breaking event to commemorate the beginning of construction of a four-star hotel on the Charles Street Jail site, next door to the Yawkey Center for Outpatient Care.
  • Getting their kicks: Program boosts confidence of kids with epilepsy
    At Derrick Clark's karate studio in Newton, 10 kids wearing traditional karate uniforms practice in front of a large mirror. They take their work seriously, executing the kicks and thrusts that make up karate's essential forms, but — like any other group of 7- to 14-year-olds — dissolve into giggles when one of them flubs a move or does something silly. And that is just the point.
  • Network conference connects cancer patients and survivors
    The Network for Patients and Families — a peer-support program at the MGH Cancer Center for patients, family members, partners and friends living with a diagnosis of cancer — held its annual spring conference, "Building a Community of Cancer Survivors Through Information, Communication and Support," May 21 at the MGH.
  • Recognizing an outstanding career
    Colleagues near and far joined together for a "Day of Science" symposium and a special dinner to honor the outstanding career of Patricia Donahoe, MD, current director of Pediatric Surgical Research Laboratories and former chief of the Pediatric Surgical Service for MassGeneral Hospital for Children.
  • In memoriam: Jean M. Nardini, RN, MSN
    Jean M. Nardini, RN, MSN, who served as nurse manager in the MGH Hemodialysis Unit, died May 23 after a long illness. She was 61. Nardini was recruited into the emerging field of hemodialysis nursing in the late 1960s, and during the ensuing 35 years helped create, build and shape the MGH program into today's premier center for the care of patients with end-stage renal disease.
  • MGH honors community women as role models of good health
    Massachusetts chairman of the House Ways and Means Committee Robert DeLeo was on hand May 25 to congratulate seven community residents who were honored by the MGH as role models of good health at the fifth annual "Celebrating Women: Leading a Vibrant, Healthy Life" women's health fair.
