• MGH diabetes research recognized
  This spring, Denise Faustman, MD, PhD, director of the MGH Immunobiology Laboratory, has been developing an important blood test that will monitor the effectiveness of a groundbreaking diabetes therapy discovered and developed in her lab. While her work has been followed intensely by the scientific press, it also has been recognized by some less expected sources — the Lee Iacocca Foundation and Oprah Winfrey.
  

• Second phase of Be Fit program hits midpoint
  The Be Fit nutrition and fitness program that swept through six departments in the hospital earlier this year now is spreading through six more areas that have formed teams in a friendly competition to eat healthier, exercise more and above all else get fit. Sponsored by MGH Nutrition and Food Services and the Clubs at Charles River Park, the second phase of the program features a team from Social Services, Speech Therapy, Physical Therapy/Occupational Therapy and MGH Administration and two teams from Nursing.
  

• Author meets with Admitting's journal club
  There was as much laughter as literature on the docket when Gloucester author Charlotte Gordon met with the Admitting Department's journal club June 8.

• Translational research will be focus of Clinical Research Day
  The third annual MGH Clinical Research Day will celebrate translational research — the critical process by which discoveries made in the laboratory are brought to the care and treatment of patients, and how information from patients and their families informs the work of basic researchers.

• Hand hygiene champions remind MGHers to use Cal Stat
  The 2004 MGH hand hygiene champion of champions — Teresa Hartman, RN, of the Yawkey 8 Cancer Center Outpatient Infusion Unit — and honorable mentions Beth Rooney, team leader of Blake 13 and 14, and Brenda Eklund, RN, of Blake 12, are featured on the latest in a series of hand hygiene posters recently distributed throughout the hospital.

• New leadership for Social Services and Chaplaincy
  Last week, Ann Daniels, MSW, PhD, was named as the new executive director for the MGH Department of Social Services and Chaplaincy. Daniels has been a member of the MGH Social Services Department since 1974, serving in the positions of unit supervisor, associate director, clinical director and most recently as interim executive director.

• Taking care of ourselves
  Access to reliable and accurate health information sometimes can be a challenge for patients. At a recent symposium held in the Blum Patient and Family Learning Center, Judy Norsigian, co-author of the revolutionary women's health book Our Bodies; Ourselves, and Karen Carlson, MD, director of the MGH Women's Health Associates and co-author of The New Harvard Guide to Women's Health, provided tips for how to find and use reliable women's health information to make the most of a doctor's visit.
